The World Trade Organization has backed the US government's right to impose duties on Chinese goods that are being dumped or subsidized. Dozens of Chinese products had been penalized by the US with countervailing and antidumping duties over the past couple of years. The WTO panel agreed that that trade remedies could be used against non-market economies like China.
According to Ron Kirk, US Trade Representative, "This is a significant win for American workers and businesses affected by unfairly traded imports".
The Panel also ruled against China on a vast majority of substantive and procedural issues that were challenged. However, the current decision of the panel can be appealed by either side within 60 days.
China had sought trade justice from the WTO in September, 2008, due to the multitude of trade complaints filed by US companies to get relief from Chinese imports. The specific duties that China had challenged, involved products including circular welded pipe, light-walled rectangular pipe and tube-off road tires, and laminate woven sacks.
